If you are quite sure what your style is, browse through interior design posts or take a design quiz. Another way to figure out your style is to walk around your home and see if you notice a pattern with your design.

Most people have a blend of styles instead of one specific style, which can make it hard to figure out how to decorate. I personally like elements from many styles, but I realized I like a mix of rustic with mid century modern. Once you figure out your own personal style, it is much easier to decorate your space so each room flows.

Shop Your Own Home Decor

Instead of spending money on new items, look around your home for items that can be moved into your bedroom. Maybe even an outdated decor item can be updated with a coat of paint to match your new bedroom makeover. Try shopping at a thrift store or yard sale for decor items as well.

Determine What You Will Splurge On

Figure out where you will spending the most money, so you can save on the other things. Sometimes you just have to splurge on some items because not everything can be updated with paint.

I was obligated to buy a new fan, there is only so much that you can do with a huge palm leaf ceiling fan. The ceiling fan has light wood tone blades and I added a small wood sign above my bed with green wreaths on either side.

Paint Goes a Long Way

If you want to go bold in this space then consider adding a small accent wall with a pop of color. An accent wall will give just a little color and will be much easier to change, if you get tired of this look.

I went with a neutral shade of greige that matches with everything because I didn’t want to repaint this space anytime soon.

Textured Accent Wall Behind Headboard

A grid accent wall placed behind the headboard is a great way to add textured and visual interest. If you have a large wall without windows an accent wall is a great way to decorate the space without over cluttering it. Consider painting your accent wall with the color Evergreen Fog for a warm calming grey green.

Wallpaper a Small Area

Instead of a textured accent wall or a bold paint color, opt for a unique wallpaper design. You can even use the wallpaper as your inspiration for the entire room by pulling colors from it and mixing it into your design.

New Fan or Light Fixture

A new fan or a light fixture is something worth splurging on for your bedroom makeover. If your bedroom fan or light fixture is in decent shape, you could try repainting it and replacing the blades. Going bold with your light fixture if a fun way to draw the eye upward while blending your design plan together.

Color Scheme, Texture, and Pattern

When decorating any space, you should think about where you will add a pattern, texture, and a color. This makes the room interesting and breaks up the neutral color palate without taking away from the calming feeling.

I added texture in my DIY headboard and comforter to add visual weight to my bedroom. If you feel like taking on a bigger project, you can had some texture in an accent wall.

The nice thing about an accent wall, is the wall will need very little decor if any to make the space feel complete. I easily added this accent wall to my son’s nursey in a long weekend.

Layer Up With Blankets and Pillows

Purchasing a new bedding set can be expensive, so if you have a decent bed spread then you should consider layering it. Layering gives an old bed spread new life by mixing textures, colors, and patterns.

A chunky knit blanket at the foot of the bed instantly updates a bedroom on a budget and can even tie in other colors in the room. Then add a few throw pillows that have a pattern that ties in the color scheme you are going for.

Add Patterns to Your Bedroom

Patterns give a room more visual interest and help bring in colors. Consider adding a pattern in throw pillows, blankets, wall art, area rugs, and even wall paper. Since we want the bedroom to have a calm feeling, consider a more simple pattern over one that is busy.

DIY Bedroom Headboard

Instead of buying a brand new headboard, I reupholstered my DIY headboard from navy to textured shade of taupe fabric. Since I was decorating my bedroom with a various shades of neutral, I thought texture would help give the room some interest.

Soft Lighting Is Best

It is best to use soft and warm lighting for a bedroom, so you feel comfortable in this space. Stark and bright lighting feels cold and uninviting in almost any space. Changing light bulbs is a budget bedroom makeover that brings a big impact on a small budget.

So, always go with a lower watt bulb and do not go with bright white unless you are decorating a dimly light basement. You can see below that the soft lighting, feel calming and welcoming in the bedroom.

Hang a New Curtain Rod or Revamp an Old One

To save money, I used a can of black spray paint that I already had on hand to update this curtain rod. A new curtain rod isn’t that expensive, but $30 here and there on decor adds up.

Plus who wants to measure and mount another curtain rod, when you can paint the existing rod and easily hang it back up. So, think of things that can be updated with paint before you get rid of them. Even a light fixture or fan can be updated with spray paint or new fan blades.

Printable Art

You can find a ton of cute printable art on Etsy for only a few dollars or you can even make your own art in a program like Canva. Simply print the art at home on quality cardstock paper or get the art printed at a place like Staples. Printing the same photo 3- 4 times and displaying in a symmetrical layout will look very appealing.

Picture Frames

Picture frames are another easy item to paint to match your new color palate. If you are adding black or a bold color to your space then you might want to consider, spray painting all of your frames the same color.

Conclusion

If you know you style in the beginning then it is so much easier to decorate your bedroom. I tried to be cheap and avoid spending money on master bedroom decor, but I am glad that I finally did because I walk into this space and feel a sense of calm come over me.
