Why DIY Home Decor
Making home decor is so satisfying because you are saving money and having fun designing custom pieces for your home. Shopping is enjoyable don’t get me wrong, but when the credit card statement comes in it’s not that exciting anymore.
After a couple of months most of us are tired of our home decor and want to change it out, so it doesn’t make much sense to spend a lot of money.
What’s You Home Decor Style?
Another great thing about making your own home decor is that you can figure out your personal style.
Once you figure out you interior design style, you can create a cohesive feel throughout your home.
I had no idea what my style was until I started decorating and realized I had no style.
There was a bunch of random things that I liked, but they didn’t all work together in my home.
I share the common mistakes that I made and that you might be making to when it comes to home decor shopping!
How to Upcycle Home Decor
Instead of throwing out every piece of home decor that I owned, I found a way to repurpose or upcycle the items.
Some items could updated with a quick coat of spray paint or stain, and other items looked better moved around.
Here I repurposed jute chargers and turned them into basket art using scrap paint.

I saw this canvas on Pottery Barn going for around $400! It is such a simple canvas with not much to it, so I thought it was crazy to pay that price.
I grabbed scrap wall paint and made this pottery barn knock off canvas from an outdated canvas that I had on hand.

To save money on living room home decor, consider making your own shelves and furniture.
My friends made this farmhouse console table for us and we made the shelf above the tv to display home decor.
The shelve above the tv really helped complete this space and it allows me to decorate where my toddlers can’t reach.
